Welcome to the James Gillespie’s Primary School Clubs page.
The clubs timetable for the current term along with the application instructions and link can be found at Timetable and Applications.
JGPS clubs are provided by Active Schools (an Edinburgh City Council department) and a range of independent providers and tutors, under the oversight of the school Senior Leadership Team. Tutor liaison, timetabling, applications and fees/invoicing are managed by the Parent Council Clubs sub-group.
Purpose Of Extra-Curricular Clubs At JGPS
The Curriculum for Excellence recognises that children’s learning and development is not confined to the classroom, but takes place in every area of a child’s life and experiences, including their home life, engagement with their community and environment, and participation in activities and clubs. To this extent, extra-curricular clubs at JGPS offer invaluable opportunities and experiences to children; opportunities that enhance and support their learning and general wellbeing as well as helping them to develop skills. They also increase children’s awareness of the cultural and sporting activities that can be a part of their lives, and introduce children to experts, whose passion and commitment to their specialisms can inspire and motivate. The aim of clubs is to give children a chance to try out activities that can’t easily be delivered in the classroom during the school day, because of time or group-size constraints.
In order to provide these opportunities to all children in our school community JGPS clubs are inclusive, and open to any child within the specified age range of the club. Places are advertised and can be applied for at any time within the application period (usually a 5-day period) for that term’s clubs. Some clubs are very popular, and in the event of oversubscription for a given club, places will be allocated randomly to those who have applied by the application period deadline. We cannot guarantee places, but everyone who has applied for a place by the deadline has an equal chance of a place for that term. If an application is not successful, the child’s name will be held on the waiting list, and if a place becomes available part way through the term the club rep will contact you. Confirmed club places are for the current term only; and a new application process will be run for the following term. Similarly, the waiting list does not carry over or guarantee a place in the following term – if you are on the waiting list in Term 1, you will still need to re-apply for Term 2.
A small number of clubs work towards building a team that competes outside the school, and certain music clubs require investment in a musical instrument. In order to accommodate this, these clubs are classified as Skills Development Clubs, and in the December and March application periods up to 50% of available places may be offered to existing attendees. The remaining 50% of places will be allocated to new applicants each term (using random allocation in the event of oversubscription). If a club is a Skills Development Club, it will be indicated on the clubs schedule.
